Stornoway Accommodation
Stornoway is the main town, and main administrative centre, in the Outer Hebrides (also known as the Western Isles) of Scotland. Being the largest port on the Isle of Lewis the town has a very distinctive look and feel. Sadly many of the town's oldest buildings no longer remain and evidence of the once vibrant herring industry is rather thin on the ground. However, after years of letting the town lose its character the local council have been working hard to create a much more enjoyable atmosphere. As you walk around Stornoway you will notice some of the usual town decorations such as flower beds and water fountains. Some new buildings, and the restoration of some of the old, help add character to the town but the two most striking aspects are the fishing vessels (shown in the photograph to the left) and the fantastic sight of Lews Castle looking over from across the water. Stornoway is a great place to serve as a base for a touring vacation in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. All the main Isle of Lewis bus routes terminate here so if you are relying upon public transport to get about then there is simply no other choice. Of course the best way to explore Lewis is in your own time on your own terms and this means either taking a vehicle over on the ferry, which is now thankfully cheaper than it once was, or hiring a vehicle.
